2026 Walkathon
Why We Walk
The Safe Refuge Walkathon is a community fundraising event. Participants walk together to raise awareness and funds to support our mission. The Last year, nearly 100 walkers showed up and together with their friends raised close to $22,000 to help keep children safe and help families in crisis.
Safe Refuge receives no federal or state funding. Every family we serve, every child placed in a safe home, every crisis call answered is all made possible by our supporters. In 2025 alone, we answered 450+ crisis calls, provided 277 days of hosting for children whose parents needed time to stabilize. Your steps on September 12th will continue to fund this important work. This event is joyful, energetic, and deeply meaningful all at once. Come see what we have planned for this year!
Ready to walk with us?

Questions?
We’ve got answers below. And when you’re ready
Who can walk?
This is a family ministry and event — kids and strollers are welcome, they’re part of what makes our mission and this day so special. The course is entirely flat and accessible for all ages and abilities. (No pets please, except service animals.)We welcome individuals of all ages: families, church groups, businesses are all welcome to join us. If you are walking solo, form a team, involve your friends and family to walk with you, or sponsor a walker, every step makes a difference.
Where is the event?
The walkathon will be he held at Fair Oaks Church in Concord, located close to the Walnut Creek/Concord border. There is plenty of free parking on site.
What time does it start and how long will it be?
Check-in begins at 8:30 AM with complimentary breakfast goodies and a coffee truck on site. We kick off at 9:00 AM with a short program, then hit the course — the walk itself is about 1 to 1.5 hours. Plan to stay for the full morning of fun and fellowship, and stick around for a complimentary lunch before you head out. We wrap up by noon, so you’ll still have the rest of your Saturday!
How far is the walk?
About 5K total — broken into roughly 6 laps around the perimeter, so you can go at your own pace and step away whenever you’re ready. The course is completely flat and accessible, making it easy for little legs, strollers, and anyone who just wants to move and enjoy the morning. Last year we had walkers, runners, and even a few who showed up in weighted vests — come however you like to move, and take it at whatever speed or distance feels good!
Is there a fee to register?
There’s a suggested registration donation of $10 for individuals and $20 for families to help cover event costs. It’s not required, but it’s appreciated. The real ask is your participation — that’s where the support and impact happens!
What should I bring?
T-shirts are provided — just tell us your size when you register. Wear comfortable shoes and bring your energy! We’ll have water, breakfast snacks and lunch. Bathrooms are available on site.
Where does the money go?
All funds raise support Safe Refuge for Children and Families serving the most vulnerable in our community. This helps provide temporary care for children while their parents navigate crises. Your support ensures that no family faces challenges alone.
Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes. Safe Refuge for Children and Families is a registered 501 (c)(3), EIN 46-3537904. Receipts are provided for all contributions.
Can’t make it?
If September 12th doesn’t work for you you have another option. Last year, we had a few friends of Safe Refuge unable to attend the event, but still gathered with their family in and walked! You can walk remotely! Registration is the same, just keep us in the loop.
Can I donate without participating in the walk?
Yes! If you’d like to support but can’t attend, you can donate HERE. Every dollar makes a difference!
How do I raise funds?
It’s simple! When you register, you’ll get a quick follow-up email with a link to set up your personal fundraising page through Fundraise Up ( it only takes a minute) From there, share your link with friends and family and let them know why you’re walking. Every share helps us reach more people and invites others to make a difference. The more people hear about the event, the greater impact we can make together for Safe Refuge families!

You made it to the end — that means you’re ready!
Join us September 12th and make your steps count.
